Orkut – Officially Shutting down on September 30th 2014

Orkut, a social networking site is officially shutting down on 30th September 2014.

Orkut, a first social networking site that we have experienced and it presented users around the globe but now slowly edging towards extinction.

Orkut was launched in 2004 and became very popular in those days specially in US. In 2004, around half of the users belonged to US and now, half of the users are belonged to Brazil and then India.

There was a time where Orkut was very popular but after some time its fallen down and Facebook have take over it. Orkut and Facebook both were launched in 2004 but facebook became very popular and its alexa rank is 2 (May 2014) where Orkut s ranked 6,101 (May 2014).

There are many users who have Orkut profile but not opened since long time. So for them that would be okay but seeing popularity in Brazil, it’s going to be little bit awful for them.

Google engineering director Paul Golgher said in a blog post: “Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell. Orkut was the result of a 20 per cent project in which Google workers got to spend a fifth of their time on ideas not necessarily related to their job responsibilities”.
